Isf your heater is near the end of its lifespan, it may stop heating your home as well. Operation may begin to cost more, and you may find yourself adjusting the thermostat higher and higher as you chase home comfort. But it does not have to be that way.

Keep reading to learn the signs that your heater is nearing the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced with a newer model. Then give our team a call for your expert HVAC services in Winston Salem. We are here to help with all of your needs from maintenance and repairs to installing a new system when the time comes.

Lack of Heat

Unfortunately, heater problems can develop so slowly that you don’t notice them right away. By the time they are farther along, you may be realizing that your heater is not warming up your home as much as it once did. Holding your hand up to an air vent, there won’t be heat radiating out into your home. Instead, the air may feel lukewarm at best.

This is a red flag that you need for service, even if your heater isn’t making unusual sounds or doing anything else to concern you. It’s better to call for service when you first realize there’s an issue with heating because otherwise, you may come home one day to find that you don’t have any heat at all.

High Energy Bills

Alternatively, you may receive your next energy bill only to realize that your unit has been operating inefficiently and costing more for operation. If you see a sudden spike in your energy costs, your heater is a good place to begin looking. It is arguably the largest appliance in your home consuming energy and contributing toward that bill.

If you haven’t significantly changed your thermostat settings, your energy bill should not go up more than just a little as a part of normal fluctuations. Keep in mind that small changes in cost are completely normal, but major spikes are not.

It’s also possible that your energy bills are going out slowly over time without ever evening out or fluctuating back down again. This is another reason to call for service for your heater. If you’re not sure how much you spent on energy costs at the same time last year, look at your previous energy bills for January and February to see if your energy use is comparable.

Heater Age

Your heater is going to run out of heating ability as it ages. If your heater is between 10 and 15 years old, it is increasingly likely that it’s time for a replacement. Wear and tear begins to add up more quickly toward the last few years of life. If you haven’t scheduled professional service in the past year or longer for your older heater, it is a good idea to go ahead and do that now. Our team can estimate how much life is left in your unit so you have a general idea of when it will need to be completely replaced.
